Middle & High School Curriculum Structure

Time Allocation Estimate:

  • Minimum 12 Hours of Independent Study per week
  • Minimum 5 hours of Direct Instruction per week
  • Mastery of Subject Matter Reached at 80% or higher

History: Online & Project-Based Curriculum

Students work daily in an online learning platform. Students will also be introduced to a historic period/event (umbrella topic). They will receive some general information in lecture format. They will then be given the opportunity to research on their own and find something that interests them regarding the umbrella topic (it could be a person, related event, place, etc.) and they will address their micro-topic regarding the particular time in question and:

  • Religious Thought
  • Political Thought
  • Social Movements/Thought
  • Scientific/Medical Advances
  • The Arts/Literature

Students will also be expected to understand the who, what, when, where, why, and how of their micro-topic and explain its historical significance. Each student will write a historic perspective and present their findings via a presentation to their mentor when they feel they have completed their work. A minimum of 3 hours of independent study per week must be dedicated to this subject matter (not counting project development).

Formal Writing/Grammar: Online & Workshop-Based Curriculum

Students will spend 3 hours a week in direct instruction and skills practice online where they will become familiar with formal writing strategies. They will be assessed through various writing assignments throughout the year and via mastery examination.

Literature: Inquiry-Based Curriculum

Students will select a new novel every three months (approved by their mentor) according to their interest. They will be grouped according to their choice into “book groups”. Each group will decide how many pages/chapters will be read each week, and will schedule group discussion/comprehension meetings with their mentor at least once per week for a minimum of 40 minutes per session. Each student will be provided with a sheet to guide them in their questioning and comprehension checks and will be expected to complete the reading as agreed upon. Each student will write a critical essay that reflects their learning and understanding of the work which will be assessed by their mentor.

Math: Mastery Curriculum (online)

Students will complete a skills level test, set learning goals, and then complete their work through the online mastery curriculum. They will advance to the next levels via examination. They will be required to complete a minimum of 5 hours of independent study in math each week.

Science: Mastery Curriculum (online)

Students will be assigned a course according to the state standards for science placement, set learning goals, and then complete their work through an online mastery curriculum. A minimum of 4 hours of independent study will be required each week. Students will also participate in two science projects per year using the Scientific Method. Each student will write a project report and present their findings (with a presentation board) to their mentor once the project is complete.

The Arts: Student-Driven Curriculum

Students will be encouraged to pursue art, creative writing, and music. Whenever possible, the school will recruit volunteers from the community to teach and mentor students within their area of interest. There is no minimum time requirement.

Friday School Policy

While students are not required to attend school on Fridays, these days can be reserved for students to make up missed time during the regular school week and/or receive extra academic support when needed. There may occasional field trips or community service activities depending on scheduling needs; however, Fridays are specifically meant to be a time for families to use as they see fit.
